60% That's a lot of work
This week we had a guest speaker and something she said really stuck with me, 60% of your work on grant writing is your homework. All I kept thinking after she said that was WOW. Then she whipped out a pile of papers the size of a small tree and told us that it had been condensed to twelve pages. Seriously twelve pages. I would have cried with all that work to waste. But, after I left I began to wonder if it was waste. She got the money after all. The cause that she believed so desperately in was granted funds to continue to operate. Is the 60% worth it then? I thinks so. But, with all good things, there must be a catch. The work is only worth it if you believe 100% in the project. I can do the 60%, I can toil for hours on a specific cause and give it my all, but if my passion and belief is at 40% then I will see the work as useless and the project probably won't get funded. So although your home work must be at 60% your passion must be the full 100.

I agree! I was floored when she slammed that stack of papers on the table. Talk about global warming! Anyway, it blew my mind that a single person was even capable of that much research. I guess you HAVE to be devoted to the cause to devote yourself to the research that much... either that or be getting a really good paycheck.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's crazy. This is going to sound sad, but I don't know if I have that much passion in me. Yes, there are causes I believe in, but grant writing is a lot of work, for something you don't even know for sure is going to get funded.
ReplyDeleteWhen she pulled out that massive pile of papers, it scared the crap out of me. Not gonna lie. The writing isn't the arm-twisting part. For me, it's the research (which is 60% of the work). Once I get started, though, it's not bad. It's the anticipation that kills me...
ReplyDeleteWhile writing our grants I found that the research was even more than 60% of the work for me. Once I got it all together it was extremely easy to type up.
ReplyDeleteThat statement was a pretty intimidating one. 60%??? Jesus. lol. That's what was going through my head. And as crazy as it may sound, once I heard that, I was so intimidated that I was afraid to actually start the process of research just from knowing how many dead ends i might hit, and oh I hit a bunch of them might I add. LOL.
